"One nation under a groove..."
Lucky for me a friend posted the dates for the concert on FaceBook and we are so happy we took her up on her question of "who's in" because what a great night it turned out to be!
George Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic tore up the place last week Friday night at the TD Toronto Jazz Festival! This is one funky grandaddy and ain't no grandpa I know can throw down like 74 year old Clinton. The crowd was already warmed up and rearing to go after a performance by Dumpstaphunk followed by Morris Day & The Time. We didn't get there in time for Dumpstaphunk but were lucky enough to watch Morris do his thing - it was like being 16 all over again watching them perform songs like "The Bird" and "Jungle Love".
George Clinton and P-Funk were performing on the main stage inside the tent set up by TD Toronto Jazz Fest which required a wristband to gain entrance. Otherwise you were watching the show from the other side of the barrier either right outside the tent or on the big screens set up outside. The crowds were massive and realizing that we weren't getting in without wristbands we starting moving with the crowd to try and find a spot behind the barrier to watch the show. At that point there were three of us in the group and right next to us, moving with the flow, was this petite woman who looked at me and asked if I wanted a wristband. I said thanks but I don't want to leave my other half and his buddy to which my guy said yes to the wristband and told me to go in and enjoy myself (so sweet!).
How wonderful was this woman? She herself had been given the wristbands by a dad who was there with his 5 year old who wasn't going to stay awake long enough to make through P-Funk. This lovely lady promised that if one of her friends weren't able to get down to Nathan Phillips in time for the concert, she would pay it forward and make some one else's night by giving away the wristband.
Man did she make my night!
The show started on time at 9pm and went through until almost 11pm and the crowd was loving every minute of it. My new concert buddy, "C" and I planted ourselves 4 deep from the stage and let George Clinton move us and groove us. That man shows no signs of slowing down other than the couple of times he had a seat and allowed the members of P-Funk to do their thing. By the time the concert was over I was slightly hoarse from singing so loudly and thrilled that I was able to see the legend that is George Clinton because of the generosity of a stranger.
TD Toronto Jazz Festival continues until June 29th and there's plenty to keep you entertained Toronto. Check out their calendar of events to see what's coming up the rest of this week.
